Norma Hasselman, 68, Oskaloosa

OSKALOOSA — Norma Hasselman, 68, of Oskaloosa, died Nov. 7, 2012, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa.

She was born July 17, 1944, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Henry and Ruth Klyn Vande Wall. In December 1963, she was united in marriage to Ron Walden and later divorced. In August 1969, Norma was married to Dave Miller and later divorced. Norma stayed home and cared for her children. On Sept. 10, 1995, Norma was united in marriage to Wayne Hasselman in Pella. Wayne died Aug. 5, 2011.

She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1962. Early on, she worked at Superior Ideal in Oskaloosa. After her children were all in school, she went to work at McDonald’s in Oskaloosa. She worked over 25 years, and she retired from being the breakfast manager in early 2011. She was a member of the Omega Church in Oskaloosa. She enjoyed traveling, doing puzzles and gardening. Norma was a devoted caregiver to her family, early on to her children, to her elderly mother and lastly taking care of Wayne as his illness progressed. She had the spirit of a fighter. In February 2012, she was diagnosed with late-stage cancer, but she did not let this diagnosis define her life. Norma integrated her treatments into daily life and continued to do the things she enjoyed throughout her journey. Norma’s positive attitude in the wake of her diagnosis served as an inspiration to those around her.

Her family includes her three daughters, Kathleen (Ron) Goldsmith of Hiawatha, Karlene (John) Marks of Menomonee Falls, Wis., and Karen Miller of Bloomfield; four grandchildren, Grant and Alex Goldsmith and Ian and Alyssa Marks; two stepsons, Gary (Amy) VanHemert of Ottumwa and Curtis VanHemert of Oskaloosa; 15 stepgrandchildren; many stepgreat-grandchildren; her brother, Cliff (Leilani) Vande Wall of Oskaloosa; a nephew, Brad Vande Wall; and a niece, Megan Vande Wall.

In addition to her husband Wayne, she was preceded in death by her parents.
