OTTUMWA – Mildred O. Miller, 98, formerly of 345 Lynwood, died at 2:35 a.m. May 12, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society – Ottumwa.
She was born February 1, 1915 in Mantua Township in Monroe County, IA to Harvey and Glessie Berkman Worley. She married Orlo R. Miller June 28, 1941 in Lancaster, MO. He preceded her in death in September of 1987.
A graduate of Albia High School, she attended business college in Albia and received her Teaching Degree from Drake University. She taught in country schools in Monroe and Wapello Counties, at the grade school in Eddyville and then for the Ottumwa Community School District at Stewart School and Douma Elementary before retirement.
Mildred was a member of Davis Street Christian Church and had been a member of First Christian Church in Albia. She was a member of Albia Chapter #240 Order of The Eastern Star, Iowa Retired School Personnel Association and American Association of University Women. She also had been a volunteer with the Ottumwa Regional Health Center Auxiliary and enjoyed traveling.
Surviving is a son, Roy (Linda) Slaymaker of Ottumwa; 3 grandchildren, Russ (Jenny) Slaymaker of Eddyville, Rick Slaymaker (Kristi Richards) and Stephanie Slaymaker both of Ottumwa; 5 great grandchildren; a sister, Pauline McDaniel of Danville, CA; along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Russell O. Miller; 4 sisters, Phyllis Brown, Winifred Smith, Irma Piper and Rena Howard.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with Revs. James H. Wakelin and Lynda Carlson officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Corners Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
