OTTUMWA – Helen Beatrice Grooms, 92, of 411 N. Milner died at 4:13 a.m. May 12, 2013 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
She was born February 14, 1921 near Bunch, IA to Clifford and Adeline Moore Strunk. She married Harvey S. Grooms January 31, 1946 in Ottumwa.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1938, she worked for John Morrell and Co. and the Camera Shop. She then worked for the Ottumwa Community School District as the Secretary of Jefferson School and for SIEDA. She also worked for Grooms Brothers Construction.
Helen was a long time dedicated volunteer for the American Red Cross and the Knoxville Veterans Hospital and had served as president of the local PTA. She and her husband enjoyed spending winters in Panama City, FL and traveling by motor-home. She also loved to dance and follow her grandchildren’s sporting events.
Surviving is her husband, Harvey; a daughter, Cathy S. (Vern) Barker of Ottumwa; a granddaughter, Amy (Jeff) Crouse-Spurgeon of Ottumwa; two great granddaughters, Chloe and Camdyn; a sister, Blanche “Curly” Petermann of Youngstown, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Max Strunk and a sister, Jewel Brown.
Her body has been cremated. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating.
Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the service.
