Ergil Hubbard, 84, Ottumwa

OTTUMWA — Ergil Lee Hubbard, 84, of Sigourney, formerly of Ottumwa, died at 9:16 a.m. May 25, 2010, at home.

He was born March 31, 1926, in Douglas County, Mo., to James Enoch and Edna Canady Hubbard. He married Virginia Millsap March 9, 1951, in Sedalia, Mo. They later divorced but remained friends.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the Philippines. He had lived in California before returning to Iowa in 1971.

He bought and sold antiques and enjoyed attending garage sales, going to junk stores and liked to mushroom hunt and gardening. He was a member of the carpenter and millwright union. His greatest pride and joy was spending time with his kids and grandkids.

Surviving are three daughters, Roxanne (Gary) Hickenbottom of Conway Springs, Kan.,  Kim (Brian) Sereg of Sigourney and Pat Hubbard of Golden City, Mo.; a son, Ricky Hubbard of Hannibal, Mo.; six grandchildren, Michelle, George, Dylan, Gavin, Brenda and Ricky; a great-grandchild, Hayden; a sister, Velma Pinckard of Albuquerque, N.M.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Alma Steele, Mary Garretson and Wilma Kempf; six brothers, Paul, Claude, Boyd, Lenray, Glen James and Leroy Hubbard.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor George Edgerly officiating. Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Cremation will follow the services.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Friday with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Friday.
