Stanley Strait, 81, Keosauqua

KEOSAUQUA — Stanley Wilbur Strait, 81, of rural Keosauqua, passed away at 1:28 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2011, in the emergency room Van Buren County Hospital, Keosauqua.

He was born July 28, 1929, to Bruce Israel and Ethel M. Craig Strait. He married Juanita Lazenby July 29, 1956. Stanley spent his life farming and raising sheep, hogs and cattle in the Pittsburg community west of Keosauqua. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was a deacon and cradle roll member of Keosauqua Christian Church and attended Zion Bible Church near Douds.

He was a member of the American Legion, had served on the Van Buren County Extension Council, Farm Bureau and Pork Producers boards as well as Southern Iowa Electric Co-op board, Bloomfield.  He was also a member of Friends of Lacey, Isaac Walton League and Blakesburg Lions Club, a lifelong member of National Rifle Assn., started a taxpayer relief association and tried to attend all county budget hearings. He did leather tooling and in his later years loved to crack and pick out hickory and walnut meats. He enjoyed Bluegrass music shows, picnicking at Ely Ford, especially wiener roasts, and working with church youth groups.

Remaining to cherish his memory are his wife, Juanita; five daughters, Davena McKim (Tom) of Gibbs, Mo., Debra Strait-Clarahan (Daniel) of Harper, Dawn Strait Carstensen (James) of Bellevue, DiAnna Strait Allen (Tom) of Mt. Sterling and Dena Strait (Richard Lanctot) of Anchorage, Alaska; 11 grandchildren, Matthew Clarahan (Brianna), Stefanie McKim (Terry Davidson), Sarah Clarahan, Abigail McKim, Ethan Strait Carstensen, Angela McKim, Maggie Strait Carstensen, Isabel Allen, Kaleb Lanctot, Tim Clarahan (Angela) and Todd Clarahan (Annie); seven great-grandchildren, Macy, Colten, Caden, Chase, Mason, Sadie and Jake; a stepsister, Dana Blaskey; cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father, stepmother, infant sister, uncles and aunts.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, Pastor Raymond Lyon and Pastor Michael Mosier officiating. Burial will be in Pittsburg Cemetery west of Keosauqua.

Visitation will open at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with family present 4-5:30 and 7-8:30 p.m.

Memorials to Friends of Lacey State Park, Pittsburg Cemetery or charity of donor’s choice may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 19667 185th St., Keosauqua, Iowa 52565.
