OTTUMWA — H. Elsie Simpson, 88, formerly of 118 Grand Ave., and of Prairie Hills Assisted Living, died at 10:22 p.m. May 22, 2013 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
She was born June 3, 1924 in Albia; the daughter of A. Harold and Grace Maude Ryun Fry. She married George H. Simpson Jr. on April 18, 1947. He preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 2000.
Elsie was a 1943 graduate of Ottumwa High School. She was a homemaker and had worked at Northwestern Bell.
She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, AARP, past president of the YWCA having been awarded the YWCA Volunteer of the Year Award several times and was the 2010 Outstanding Older Adult Nominee of the Presbytery of Des Moines. Elsie was also a Hospice volunteer. She and her husband had been honored as Hospice Volunteer of the Year multiple times.
Surviving are two sons, Russ Simpson of Ottumwa and Rick (Teresa) Simpson of Eddyville; a daughter, Jody (Donnie) Bogert of Bloomfield; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a brother, Bob Fry of Mississippi; two sisters-in-law, Connie Stufflebeam and Joan Simpson. both of Ottumwa; special friends, Roy and Nancy Roberts.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Sandra Simpson; an infant great-granddaughter, Tory Lynne Simpson; a sister, Hettie Augspurger; a brother, Roy Fry.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Jane Martinez and Rev. David Klanderman officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday with the family present from 5-7 p.m.
