---- — OTTUMWA — Emogene Elaine Olinger, 88, formerly of 118 S. Union St., died at 10:55 a.m. May 23, 2013 at The Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa

She was born Dec. 4, 1924 in Ottumwa to Cornelius and Minnie Morgan Hourihan. She married James Olinger on Oct. 17, 1943. He preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 1999.

Emogene was a 1943 graduate of Ottumwa High School. She was a resident of Ottumwa most of her life except when she lived in Davis county from 1963-96.

She had worked at St. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa and Davis County Hospital in Bloomfield.

Emogene attended Davis St. Christian Church. She was a recipient of the Governor’s Award for Volunteers for Service at the Department of Human Services.

Surviving are four daughters, Marilyn Olinger of Ottumwa, Mary Lou Brown of Mishicot, Wis., Barbara (Ferenc) Kantor of Seeheim, Germany, Debra (Jim) Nelson of Ankeny; five sons, Paul (Diana) Olinger of Ottumwa, Tom (Margie) Olinger of Downing, Mo., Steven (Rev. Donna) Olinger of Bloomfield, Robert (Sherry) Olinger of Birmingham and Joseph Olinger of Bloomfield; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Charles Barton Olinger; three brothers, Mike, Bud and Dan Hourihan; four sisters, Marjorie Peters, Pauline Moll, Gertrude Cottrell and Louise Clements.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home with her daughter-in-law, Rev. Donna Olinger of the Troy and Cantril United Methodist Churches, officiating.

Cremation will follow the services. Inurnment will be in Sherman Chapel Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation is open after 5 p.m. today. The family will be present one hour prior to the service on Sunday.
