OTTUMWA — Dr. Sverre Henry Hammer, 79, of 2357 Timberlane Hts. died at 6:15 a.m. August 31, 2013 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
He was born October 12, 1933 in Stoughton, WI to Rev. Sverre Henry and Hilda Offerdahl Hammer. He married Mary Beth Augspurger on August 1, 1964 at First United Methodist Church in Ottumwa.
Henry graduated high school in Swea City, IA in 1951 and received his DDS from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1957. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959 having served in Neu Ulm, Germany. Having opened his own dental practice in Ottumwa in November of 1959, he retired in 2009 after 50 years in practice.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, former President and member of University of Iowa Dental Alumni Association, a lifetime member of the National Dental Association and Iowa Dental Association. He also had served on various boards and committees in the community.
Surviving is his wife, Mary Beth; 3 sons, Michael S. (Robin) Hammer of Stevenson Ranch, CA, Ronald E. (Cheryl) Hammer of Valencia, CA and Charles P. (Darci) Hammer of Ottumwa; 6 grandchildren, Michael, Luke, Hank, Brooke, Joe and Adam; a brother, Ronald (Marty) Hammer of Pennsylvania; 2 sisters, Betty (Rev. Duane) Nelson of Wisconsin and Sedell (Darrel) Bishop of Ankeny.
He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Orval and Martha Augspurger; and an infant sister, Helen.
His body has been cremated. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jon Disburg officiating.
Private inurnment will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.
Visitation with the family present will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home.
