OTTUMWA — Barbara Frances Meeker, 87, of Ottumwa, died at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 31, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Born July 2, 1926, in Ottumwa, she was the daughter of Earl and Grace Schwilk Greenlee. In January 1947, she married Alva H. Meeker in Wapello County. He died in November 1985.
Barbara worked at the Ottumwa Hospital as a licensed practical nurse in the neonatal unit and the ICU with newborns.
She graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1945 and Indian Hills Community College as a licensed practical nurse.
She was a member of First Christian Church in Ottumwa. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, knitting, crosswords and especially spending time with her family.
Survivors include three daughters, Marjorie Woodard of Oquawka, Ill., Geane E. (Dennis) Cleland of Burlington and Frances Smith of Lead Hill, Ark.; four sons, Richard (Karen) Meeker of Ottumwa, John Meeker of Bonaire, Ga., Thomas Meeker of Marion and Paul Meeker of Wyoming, Iowa; 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Robin Greenlee of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Laurel Copeland of Des Moines; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Donovan Woodard; one brother, Charles Greenlee; and two sisters, Lucille Perry and Jane Valentine.
Cremation has been entrusted to Thielen Crematory.
The memorial service for Mrs. Meeker will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Ottumwa; with Reverend Melvin Mattox officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Iowa City Hospice.
