OTTUMWA — Leonard Serle Deaver, 74, of Chariton, formerly of Ottumwa, died Aug. 29, 2013, at home.
He was born Sept. 29, 1938, in Ocheyedan to Leonard Everett Deaver (1916-99) and Joycelyn Brody Deaver (1919-2009).
Serle served the Ottumwa Family YMCA from September 1966 until the fall of 1971 as youth and camp director for Camp Arrowhead. During that time, the campaign for the current Y building on the west side of town was held. The money was raised, and the move from the old Y downtown building to the new building took place. Serle organized the Y-Indian Guides and Princesses into active tribes and council. He also worked with High School Corral Board, which planned activities for all youth in the community. He was a member of the Methodist Church and active in the State Young Adults organization.
Serle graduated from Roosevelt High School, Cedar Rapids, in 1957 and from Westmar College, Le Mars, in 1961 with a major in biology and minor in physical education. Serle was a member of the Iowa National Guard beginning in 1957 until his discharge June 1964. On Nov. 29, 1969, Serle married Sharon Cline Deaver at First Baptist Church, Des Moines. Serle and Sharon have one son, Leonard Thomas “Tom” Deaver of Springfield, Mo. The couple returned to their home state of Iowa in 2010 after living away from Iowa for 39 years.
A private burial was held Sept. 4at the Glasgow Cemetery , Lockridge (near Fairfield). The service was conducted by the Rev. Kevin Dice of Round Prairie Baptist Church.
A celebration of Serle’s life Service conducted by Pastor Dennis St. Lawrence will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Grace Baptist Church, 703 S. First St., Chariton ( just off of Hwy. 34 North). Music will be provided by members of Grace Church orchestra/choir with Kathy Brown Harvey, pianist, and family friend, Carolyn K. Griffiths, of Monmouth, Ill., joining choir members. The family will be in the conference room on upper floor of the church from 9:45-10:45 a.m.
