John Paxton Sr.

OTTUMWA — John R. “Red” Paxton Sr., 81, of 402 N. Iowa Ave., died at 4:34 p.m. September 9, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

He was born September 13, 1931, in Ollie to John and Mary Bond Paxton. He married Barbara Dyer on July 21, 1952. She preceded him in death on December 6, 1991.

A 1950 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Red served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Hawaii and Japan.

He worked for Green Cottage Grocery, and for over 25 years he owned and operated Paxton Grocery at the corner of Iowa Avenue and Fourth Street. He owned and operated Paxton & Son Meats north of Ottumwa until 1991.

Red attended Calvary Open Bible Church. He was a member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion, Izaak Walton League, Ottumwa Masonic Lodge #16 A.F. & A.M. and had served on the Ottumwa Community School Board.

Surviving are two daughters, Debbie Mullenix of Ottumwa and Bonnie Nelson of Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren, Cinthia Van Alst of Phoenix, Ariz., Charlie Van Alst of Las Vegas, Nev., Johnny Paxton III, Michael (Lindsay) Paxton and Nicholas Paxton, all of Ottumwa; seven great-grandchildren, Johnny Paxton IV, Catarina Van Alst, Vincent Paxton, Madeline Paxton, Keaton Paxton, Eva Paxton and Konnor Foudree; three brothers, Wilbur (Janice) Paxton of Albia, Gilbert (Carol) Paxton of Ottumwa and Harold (Frances) Paxton of Edina, Minn.; two sisters, Eva Mae (Glen) Sipe and JoAnn Collier, both of Ottumwa; his companion of over 20 years, Connie Roe; his dog, Riley.

He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Paxton II, and a granddaughter, Denise Paxton.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.
