Max Silvers

BLOOMFIELD — Max Ernest Silvers, 82, of Bloomfield, died Sept. 18, 2013, at his home.

He was born Oct. 19, 1930, in West Grove to Claire Ernest and Helen Mae Kinman Silvers. He married Margaret Ann Gooden March 6, 1954, in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Max served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a farmer and worked for John Deere for more than 30 years, retiring in 1993 as the head field mechanic. After retirement, he started a hay bailing business which kept him busy until his late 70s. He was a member of the West Grove United Methodist Church, Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield, the UAW Local 74 in Ottumwa and was active in helping disabled veterans. Max enjoyed showing antique cars and tractors at shows for many years. He also enjoyed car races and spent time racing midgets in his younger days. He was a life-long resident of Bloomfield.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Steve Silvers of Bloomfield and Michael (Sheryl) Silvers of Carlisle; four daughters, Carla Silvers of Warrensburg, Mo., Joni Hoover (Thomas Swaim Jr.), Jan Christensen, both of Bloomfield, and Dana (Robb) Cook of Martin, S.D.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald LaVerne Silvers of Lake Havasu, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter-in-law, Tammy Silvers.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield; Pastors Marvin Martin and Sheri Squires officiating. Burial with graveside military rites performed by Reed-Whisler Post #78 American Legion will be at the Troy Cemetery in Troy.

Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the family present to greet friends from 5-7 p.m.

Memorials have been established to Hospice of Wapello and Davis Counties, West Grove United Methodist Church and the Parkinson’s Foundation.
