Jewel Barker

Ottumwa Courier

---- — OTTUMWA — Eighty-nine wonderful years of life came to a close the evening of Sept. 30, 2013, when Jewel Adeline Barker left this world to be with her Savior and her beloved husband LaVern, who preceded her in death only four months ago. Her daughter Connie and granddaughter Kim were at her side. Her family rejoices that all the pain and suffering associated with the Alzheimer’s Disease has ended and she is with LaVern in Heaven.

Jewel was born to Viola and Walter Bergman, on Dec. 15, 1923. She was raised with her five siblings in Ottumwa. Brothers Clifford Leedall and Vincent Bergman preceded her in death; surviving siblings are June Heinz, Scotty Hamilton and Wally Bergman.

Jewel had many loves, but none more so than her husband LaVern. They wed on Dec. 24, 1941 and were married 71 incredible years. They had two children, Connie and Vernie. She took great pride in being a homemaker and serving her family all the years of her life. She loved to sing hymns, share their love of Jesus with so many friends at Northgate Alliance Church in Ottumwa and tend to the lovely land and flower gardens surrounding their home of 63 years. Playing the organ and singing were her favorite pastimes, as was watching any sporting event, whether it was from the bleachers or from the comfort of “their” chairs at home. It is an honor to celebrate Mom and Grandma for a life well lived as we go forward knowing that “In the Garden” she will never walk alone.

She is survived by her children, Connie Terrell and Walter LaVern (Cathy) Barker; four grandchildren, Kim Terrell, Kris (Dani) Terrell, Kelli (Chris) Hall and Amy (Jeff) Crouse-Spurgeon, along with six great-grandchildren, Brent and Taylor Terrell, Gabbie and Tanner Hall, Chloe Davis and Camdyn Crouse as well as extended family and friends, near and far.

Graveside services and burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Shaul Cemetery in Ottumwa; Pastor David Klanderman officiating. Arrangements have been made by Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, where visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
