OTTUMWA — Leona “Onie” Frances Surber Sapp Briles, 71, of Ottumwa, went into the Lord’s hands October 4, 2013, at 4:25 p.m. at her home surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born June 8, 1942, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Clyde E. and Emma M. Russell Surber. She married Eddie E. Sapp on July 20, 1957. He preceded her in death. She then married Robert Briles on May 3, 1971. They later divorced.
She worked at Chamberlains, McCurdy Seeds as well as doing in-home health care. She retired from Everco Industries.
Leona “Onie” is survived by her children, Dorothy (John) Beedilla, Eddie E. (Tara) Sapp, Carrie (Don) Quinby, George E. Sapp, Roy E. Sapp, Jane E. Petersma, Helen (Todd) Stuart, Debra L. Briles and Becky Surber; 20 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; a brother, Edwin Shadduck; two sisters, Daisy Porter and Mary Jane King; and many others she claimed as her “kids” along with a special niece, Emma Kinn of Lampasas, Texas.
Everyone called her “Mom or Grandma.”
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson; sisters, Liz Davis, Margaret Champagne, Charlene Surber and Ethel Wasko; brothers, Clyde, Donald and Darrell Surber, Orville, Willard and Robert Shadduck.
Her body has been cremated.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Shaul Cemetery.
Memorial has been established to the family.
