Lavern Weaver

OTTUMWA – Lavern Lewis Weaver, 88, of 1567 N. Van Buren Ave., died at 2:49 p.m. October 11, 2013 at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

He was born August 20, 1925, in Davis County to Wilbur C. and Faye Ballew Weaver. He married Freda I. Bullock October 17, 1947.

A graduate of Bloomfield High School in 1944, he moved to Ottumwa in 1947. He worked for John Morrell and Co. moving to LaSalle, Ill., Indianapolis, Ind., and to Des Moines in 1967. He then owned Langebartels Clothing Store in Knoxville in 1968. He moved back to Ottumwa in 1970, where he owned and operated Weaver’s Mens Shop for almost 20 years. Upon his retirement, he owned and oversaw Weaver Construction and Development and the building projects on Weaver Drive.

Lavern was a member of Davis St. Christian Church, where he and his wife were very active. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge #16 A.F. & A.M., Ottumwa Morning Kiwanis and the Wapello County Historical Society. He was very active in Ottumwa Jaycees Downtown Retail Division and the “They” Committee. While his children were growing up, he was active in Scouting, Little League and Soap Box Derby Racing, where he had served as chairman of the committee in Ottumwa.

He and his wife wintered in Arizona for 30 years, he loved to play cards and they are great NASCAR fans. His claim to fame was that he was a “Go Go Dancer” at the Regis and Kelly Live TV show on their 59th wedding anniversary.

Surviving are his wife, Freda; two sons, Danny (Susan) Weaver of Kansas City, Mo., and Gregg (Marisela) Weaver of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Leanne Weaver of Ottumwa; four grandchildren, Nicholas, Kelsey, Paige and Charles.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Roger Lee Weaver; his parents; two brothers, Lawrence and LaRue Weaver.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Davis St. Christian Church with Rev. James H. Wakelin officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Davis St. Christian Church or Dollars for Scholars at Davis County High School.
