---- — OTTUMWA — James Robert Coleman, formerly of Ottumwa, died peacefully Oct. 31, 2013, at his home in Watertown, Mass., surrounded by family and friends.

Jim was born in Ottumwa in 1933 to Hilda and James H. Coleman. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1951. Jim was a lifelong educator, teaching both English and humanities. He retired in 1995 from Suffolk University Boston as associate director of the library. He has written several books, both academic and literary. With his wife Judy Dushku Coleman, he started THRIVE, an organization that operates a center for education and support of the emotional healing and rehabilitation of victims of the Ugandan civil war.

Jim is survived by his daughters and their families, Elizabeth Crawford, Allison Goldfarb, Leslie Coleman, Molly Muchmore; along with the mother of his daughters, Jo Ellen Newell Coleman, who was also originally from Ottumwa; his wife Judith Dushku; his stepchildren, Aaron Dushku, Ben Dushku, Nate Dushku, Nate Dushku and Eliza Dushku and their families. In Iowa, he leaves his sister, Jacqueline (Coleman) Cooksey and her family.
