Janet Evelyn Van Veen, 75, of 1336 W. Williams, entered into rest at 2:50 p.m. December 26, 2012 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
She was born August 25, 1937 to Walter Abner and Florence May Skirvin Wood on a farm west of Ottumwa. She attended rural schools, including Elm Grove Grade School through the 8th grade and graduated from Blakesburg High School in 1955. She married Emmett Van Veen on February 22, 1963.
Jan worked as a secretary in Des Moines, Newton and Ottumwa and in Sioux Falls, SD. She was a U.S. Army court martial reporter at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. Jan was co-founder of a South Dakota organization which urged schools to provide appropriate education for special needs students in the state. She served as director of special projects for the South Dakota Democratic Party.
Surviving are her husband, Emmett; three sons Brian Van Veen of Ottumwa, Andy (Bridget) Van Veen of Sioux Falls, SD and Warren (Kindra) Van Veen of Carroll; three step-sons, Emmett Van Veen Jr. and Bruce (Bridget) Van Veen both of Ottumwa, John Van Veen of Oskaloosa; seven grandchildren, Jordan Van Veen, Briann Postier, Kimberly Watkins, Lexi and Kylee Van Veen, Chandra Coull, Travis Schoonover; a great-grandson, Carver Schoonover; seven step-grandchildren six step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Mull and Oma Klontz of Ottumwa; sisters-in-law, Gracie Jaster Wood of Blakesburg, Sandra Kay Van Veen Fluaitt of Iowa City and Charlene Koonce of Seminole, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jim Wood and Victor Wood; five sisters, Pauline Sholes, Frances Venator, Marian Paxton, Helen Ver Steegh and Ethel Haff Kuhn.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Glen Cochran officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Friday with the family present from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday.
