Stay involved and be part of the process
Our Opinion
Courier Editorial Board
We hope all of you keep up the political fervor of the past few months by attending the Courier’s Meet the Legislators session Saturday morning at Hotel Ottumwa.
The event begins at 9 a.m. in the Fox and Sac room on the main floor of the hotel, 107 E. Second St.
It’s the third year for the session which area legislators Mary Gaskill and Keith Kreiman suggested that we host.
They are great sessions, with about 50 people attending to discuss a variety of topics.
The Ottumwa League of Women Voters hosts monthly sessions for the legislators and the public when the Iowa Legislature is in session.
We’ve been fortunate lately to have our area lawmakers show up just prior to the opening of the legislative session.
It gives all of us an opportunity to tell them what we think is important and to urge them to consider our viewpoints.
Some subjects resurface every year such as the need for a four-lane highway between Ottumwa and Bloomfield. With Gaskill, D-Ottumwa, and Kreiman, D-Bloomfield and Curt Swaim, D-Bloomfield, we are in agreement that the four-laner is definitely needed not only to improve that highway’s safety record, but to make traffic, business and residential more accessible to Davis County.
We hope to see you there, along with as many area legislators who can make it.
Also, it is our hope that all of you who have become so involved in the caucus process continue your presence at other government functions.
Political involvement starts at home and we hope you continue to pay attention to city government, county government and our local school board meetings.
In other words, show up at a council meeting, visit a county supervisor session and/or school board meeting. Consider serving on a city committee.
Call your council person, supervisor or school board member for information or to share your concerns. Write letters to the editor. Keep watch on what our governmental bodies are doing and become a part of the process. It’s your government.
There is a letdown as Iowa’s political stature fades away for another four years. But there doesn’t need to be a letdown individually. There is plenty of local government that needs your input.
Stay involved.
