A good campaign in store
Wow! This is going to be one great general election.
At stake for Ottumwans is the majority of the city council.
Three of the five council seats are up for election Nov. 3. Two of the incumbents — Gordon Aistrope and Bob Meyers — made it past the primary. The third seat is that of Shannon Addison who did not run.
That means the City Council will have at least one new member.
And according to Tuesday’s primary vote totals, the incumbents have their work cut out for them.
The primary narrowed the list to six council candidates and two mayoral candidates.
Aistrope was the low votegetter of the six primary winners, garnering 729 votes.
Incumbent Bob Meyers won 1,074 votes.
The other four winners of the primary were: Bill Allen, 1,087 votes; Rick McClure, 1,014 votes; Brian Morgan, 1,088 votes; and Jeremy Weller, 926 votes.
The mayor’s race wasn’t close as far as the four candidates were considered; the two winners had big leads over the other two candidates. But, the two winners’ vote totals couldn’t have been closer — incumbent Dale Uehling ended up with 1,098 votes, and Frank Flanders had 1,097 votes.
Look for a lot more campaigning as the election date draws nearer.
What we hope is that Wapello County Auditor Kelly Spurgeon is right, that the November election will draw a bigger turnout.
On Tuesday, just over 17 percent of eligible voters in Ottumwa voted in the primary. That percentage, she said, was about the same as it was in 2003 and 2005.
And here, with all the candidates running, we were hoping the turnout would be larger.
Hopefully it will on Nov. 3.
