Campers upset at dismissal of managers
Our opinion
Courier Editorial Board
A few campers are upset that the popular managers of the camp ground at Ottumwa Park have been let go. They would like to know why.
And, so would the managers — Doug and Bonnie Creamer.
They have been informed by city officials that their services will no longer be required.
A Courier reporter talked to them this week at their home in Texas. The Creamers said that they were not told why they were not rehired.
City officials said this week that it is a personnel matter, and therefore the reasons can’t be released.
It leaves a bad taste in people’s mouths, especially on this holiday.
From what we’ve heard from campers who use the park and from others, the Creamers were respected, popular managers who did a good job.
An Arkansas couple wrote that the Creamers “were always hard working, trying to keep the park nice and clean for the campers. I think this is a big mistake on the city’s part. You won’t ever find anyone to do all they did.”
The city is advertising for new camp ground managers. We hope that they are successful in bringing on board someone who will be as popular as the Creamers have been for 11 years.
All summer long, the campground has been full of RVs and other campers. It’s a good image for the city, and it’s good for business.
Some campers say they now may camp elsewhere.
That’s not good for business.
