Participating in democracy important for young people

Ottumwa Courier

---- — The League of Women Voters of Ottumwa would like to thank the Wapello County Auditor’s office and Ottumwa High School Principal Mark Hanson for working with the League to ensure that every graduating senior at OHS receives an Iowa Voter Registration Form in their diploma packet.

The future of our democracy rests with citizens who recognize that every right has commensurate responsibilities, one of which is an active participation in the elective process.

The League wants all eligible seniors to register when they turn 18 and to vote in upcoming elections. We want to thank those students who have already registered and may have already participated in the 2012 elections. It is the responsible thing to do.

There is a special election for Wapello County Recorder scheduled for July 9, Ottumwa School Board election scheduled for Sept 10 and city elections scheduled for Nov. 5. These are real opportunities for all voters to have their say in local government. The League will be educating voters prior to these elections.
