Keep the politics out of legislative forum
Ottumwa Courier

---- — Recently I attended the League of Women Voter’s forum at the Bridge View Center. The forum is a great opportunity to hear from our senators and representatives and what is going on at the Capitol. The elected officials present were state Sens. March Chelgren and Ken Rozenboom; and state Reps. Mary Gaskill, Larry Sheets and Curt Hanson.

This brings me to my concern with the forum. For the first time in years, Republicans have the majority in our area and it seems the League of Women Voters are bringing in outside Democrat representatives to “even” the debate. The League claims to be bi-partisan, but their actions in inviting elected officials who do not represent our county is wrong.

If the League can invite any surrounding legislators, why not invite state Sen. Sandy Greiner who previously represented Wapello County just as Rep. Hanson did? Or would additional Republicans compromise the group’s agenda even more?

I thoroughly enjoy the forums our local League of Women Voters host. I just wish we could keep politics out of it.
