First City Council meeting of 2014 set for Tuesday

Courier staff writer

---- — OTTUMWA — Tuesday will be the first City Council meeting of 2014, and it will be the first for a few new members.

Councilmembers Matt Dalbey and Skip Stevens, as well as Mayor Tom Lazio, will participate in their first City Council meeting since being elected in November.

Topics on the agenda for the meeting include setting public hearings on Jan. 21 for several projects, including the Lagoon Pump Station Improvements Project, the Pennsylvania Avenue Reconstruction Project (Brentwood Drive to Jefferson Street), the Hangar Fire Detection System Replacement Project at the Ottumwa Regional Airport and Contract Three of the 2010 Flood Protection Mitigation Project.

Other recommendations for council members include the approval of the three-year lease with the Ottumwa Saddle Club, awarding the contract for the Market Street Bridge Deck Replacement Project and approving a change order for the Ballingall Fountain Renovation Project.

There are also a few projects that have been completed and are awaiting payment from the city. The Hamilton Street Sewer Separation Project is ready for the City Council to accept the work as final and complete so the final pay request can be approved, and council members will also vote on the approval of the $6,000 contribution to the storm drainage system at Theater Drive. The payment would be made to T.J. Heller for offsetting some of the drainage costs to bring the drainage system from a 10-year to a 100-year flood event. Doing so would mean the storm drainage system at Theater Drive would comply with current storm water drainage standards and encourage the development of the newly constructed Aspen Dental Clinic.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Council Chambers of City Hall. Before the meeting, there will be a discussion among the council starting at 5 p.m. about the rules and procedures, committees, commissions and boards.
