---- — OTTUMWA — Kaitlyn Baeza of Ottumwa enjoys painting, and the Iowa Kids University helped her and several other children create colorful pictures on Monday.
Baeza said she prefers using black, blue and purple in most of her pictures. One look around the large room could convince the casual observer that the other children were using all the other colors.
Kristen Meeker, a volunteer at Iowa Kids University, said the children were also learning how to draw and shade the images they were creating.
"This is the third year for our summer art workshop. Typically we do three sessions, but this year we're doing only two sessions because of all the snow days," Meeker said.
Sue Huff, executive director of Iowa Kids University, said the group is planning several events and/or activities for children this summer included Healthy Family Day. Huff said Jim Karp, a longtime Iowa trooper, will emcee at "Healthy Farm Day" in the shelter at Ottumwa Park. He will focus on bike safety training.
"Jim and I coordinate that program every year," she said.
Iowa Kids University, 214 E. Main St., will host a collage and recyclable art session from 9 to 11:30 a.m. next Monday.
