OTTUMWA — Motorists are advised that Pennsylvania Avenue will be closing for Stage 1 of the Pennsylvania Avenue Reconstruction and Widening Project on Thursday.
Pennsylvania Avenue will be closed from just downhill from the intersection with Jefferson Street up to the Terrace Hill Plaza Strip Mall. The intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Jefferson Street will also be closed to traffic. All businesses along Pennsylvania Avenue and Jefferson Street will remain open throughout construction.
The Pennsylvania Avenue Reconstruction and Widening Project consists of the complete reconstruction of Pennsylvania from Brentwood Drive to Jefferson Street. The project will be done in several stages in order to maintain access for businesses and residents along the route.
The overall project will widen the traffic lanes and add a center turn lane on Pennsylvania Avenue. Dedicated turn lanes will be constructed at the intersection of Elm Street and Pennsylvania Avenue with an upgraded traffic signal at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.
Utility improvements include the installation of a separate storm sewer and rerouting part of the sanitary sewer system. The project cost is $2,444,870. DeLong Construction, Inc. of Washington, Iowa, was the successful bidder.
