OTTUMWA — A theft investigation involving a local man turned into quite a long situation for Ottumwa police on Thursday.
According to Police Chief Tom McAndrew, officers obtained a warrant for arrest for Shawn Lee Forney, of Ottumwa, and tried to execute it Thursday morning at a room at the Colonial Motor Inn on Albia Road. However, when they reached the door they discovered Forney had barricaded himself inside.
Forney tried to escape out of a back window, McAndrew said, but was unsuccessful. Then, officers talked with him through the closed front door for about an hour and a half before he finally gave himself up.
Along with Forney in the room was a female named Danielle Lasley-Eakins, who was later found to have a warrant out for her arrest for failure to appear.
McAndrew said both Forney and Lasley-Eakins were arrested on site and taken to the Wapello County Jail, where they remain on a $5,000 and $1,500 bond, respectively.
