---- — OTTUMWA — The attorneys who represented Seth Techel at two inconclusive trials have been allowed to withdraw from the case.
Steven Gardner and Robert Box asked to leave the case after Techel’s second trial on charges of murder and nonconsensual termination of a human pregnancy stemming from the murder of his wife, Lisa, ended in a hung jury. Gardner, the lead attorney in the case, applied to withdraw Nov. 19.
Two attorneys have been appointed to represent Techel as the state prepares for a third trial. Jake Feuerhelm and Roger Owens now lead the defense. Feuerhelm, who was requested by Techel, made his initial appearance in the case Monday.
Judge Daniel Wilson has yet to rule on a defense request to amend the conditions of Techel’s pretrial release. Techel has been incarcerated since he was charged in May 2012. The defense wants Wilson to reduce the cost for securing Techel’s release. Prosecutors object, saying the charges have not changed and do not warrant a lower amount.
