OTTUMWA — Chamber Director Tim Kurtz is pleased with this year's chamber golf outing, saying it was a record year for participation.
The event centers on golf, but how many golf tournaments have a dunk tank and a pair of DJs as part of the proceedings? To Kurtz, the value in the event is twofold.
“We're membership-based, but we have to do fundraising to offset what memberships don't cover,” he said.
That covers one aspect. But why golf? Kurtz said the game provides an ideal opportunity to get people together and mingle outside of the office. The golfing skill on display, or lack thereof, is complimented by the chance to network and get to know others in the Ottumwa business community.
“It's not really a golf tournament. It's a golf outing,” he said.
The weather wound up cooperating spectacularly, though Kurtz admits to some nervousness Thursday night when storms rolled through Iowa. He checked the radar on his cell phone repeatedly until he was sure things wouldn't be a washout.
The storms moved off and conditions were close to idea, even if the dunk tank was a bit cool.
