McCoy reaches out to troubled teens with novel

‘It Seemed Like the End’ is Ottumwa author’s first novel

OTTUMWA — Ottumwan Glenn McCoy saw a need to reach out to troubled teens. His way was through his writing.

McCoy, 71, recently published his first Christian novel. The novel, “It Seemed Like the End,” is set around a young boy who is neglected by his parents and finds himself in trouble. With the help of a Christian woman and her pastor, the boy is able to turn his life around and find a new beginning.

“I don’t know where the idea actually came from, but I have taught Sunday school for the past 54 years and I see a lot of kids who are neglected by their parents,” he said, thinking that could be the basis of a good novel.

After developing the rough idea, McCoy sought out further help from his family and friends to finish the idea he had started.

“Everyone was telling me I should publish this once I was done with it,” he said.

He said the novel is meant to show the loving relationship that a parent can have with a child and how the absence of such can be detrimental to their well-being.

“The message is that there needs to be love and guidance of a parent in every kid’s life,” he said.

McCoy, an Ottumwa native, said he was raised in a Christian home and was taught values and principles.

“I think a parent’s influence can guide a child to become who they are, and without that love, it can turn them in the wrong direction, too,” he said.

McCoy said the novel has a strong message for both kids and adults.

“It’s the story the Lord gave me,” he said.
