Own goal sinks Bulldogs in overtime
PELLA — It took an own goal at the 87th minute of overtime to send the Ottumwa girls soccer team to defeat on Monday in Pella.
Ottumwa out-shot the Little Dutch 20-10 but could not get a ball in the back of the net to pull out a win.
Regardless of the loss, OHS head coach Erin Ebling is confident her Bulldogs can get back into the win column at Des Moines North Thursday.
“This match really did give our girls confidence. The girls did a good job of working together and helping create open shots,” said Ebling.
Ottumwa falls to 3-5 overall but this match could have been one that was registered as a victory. Ebling stated that were at least five several shots on goal in the first half that were near misses and could have went for goals.
The unfortunate part of the contest was Ottumwa’s inadvertent touch on a ball that ended the match.
“It came down to overtime. We got a bad touch on the ball, it went off the girls’ foot wrong. That gave them their goal and win,” said Ebling.
Whitney MacQueen, Mette Mengshoel and Kaley VanVelsor each led Ottumwa with three shots on goal respectively.
