Ottumwa breaks school record for wins

WEST DES MOINES — The Ottumwa boys soccer squad threw a celebration on Tuesday night in West Des Moines.

Ottumwa achieved school history with win No. 8 on the regular season with a 10-0 drilling of West Des Moines Valley’s junior varsity team.

Ottumwa broke the school record for most wins in a season, which was seven, achieved in ’04 and ’05.

“I would say we made a statement,” said first-year Ottumwa head coach David Schwent.

Ottumwa scored seven second-half goals and was led by senior foreign-exchange student Simon Koops’ three goals and three assists.

Ottumwa pounded on Valley’s keeper for 37 total shots. Martin Garcia and Thomas Lundmark each accounted for two goals apiece.

To get an idea of just where the Bulldog boys soccer program stands in just its fifth season of competition, Schwent doesn’t think Valley will bring its JV squad to play the Bulldogs next season.

Valley’s varsity squad is currently the top ranked team in Class 2A.

“We wanted to come out and make a statement. We wanted to come out here and say you should be down here, not your JV squad,” said a confident Schwent. “I’m sure Valley won’t be doing that next year. They shouldn’t feed their JV team us.”

Ottumwa (8-1) hosts Des Moines North Thursday at Walsh Soccer Complex. Ottumwa closes the home portion of its regular season on Senior Night versus Fairfield on Friday.
