OTTUMWA — Des Moines Hoover didn’t have a chance versus the Ottumwa girls tennis team during Senior Night on Tuesday at Dan Staggs Courts.
Ottumwa improved to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in CIML Metro play with an 11-0 shutout of the Huskies.
“It was nice weather and we beat the rain,” said Ottumwa head coach Dan Staggs.
Ottumwa is proving that is has many viable candidates that could make a deep run into the postseason.
Ottumwa’s No. singles player Jana Sandova, is a such a player. She almost blanked Katie Lovan in her 6-1, 6-0 two-set sweeps.
Ottumwa senior Jennifer Palmer switched those scores around against Hajra Kadvisio at No. 2 singles. Palmer won 6-0 in the first set and gave up just one game in the second set to continue her stellar season.
Laura Schwenk, another OHS senior, encountered little resistance in her No. 3 singles match versus Alana Andorf. She won by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.
Bulldog senior Ashley Owens won 6-1, 6-3 over her opponent at No. 5 singles.
Juniors Torrie Centeno (No. 4 singles) and Kayla Wagner (No. 6 singles) won their respective singles matches with ease as well. The Bulldog duo — state doubles qualifiers in ’07 — teamed up to down Kadvisio and Andorf at No. 1 doubles by a finish 6-0, 6-3.
Schwenk and Owens won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Ottumwa sophomores Mahala McDanel and Julie Hemmings won the No. 3 doubles match 6-0, 7-6 (7-3).
Bulldog senior Brittni Longer and soph Jenna Burke continued OHS’ winning ways with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 4 doubles.
Ottumwa senior Elisabeth Archer and freshman Allison Schulz worked their rackets to a 6-2, 6-4 win at the final doubles slot.
Ottumwa plays the winner of Newton and Hoover in Class 2A Region 2 team tennis on Saturday May 17 in Indianola.
