Cardinal finishes third at conference meet, Van Buren boys second
ELDON — The Cardinal girls track team finished a respectable third place Tuesday in the SEISC South Division Girls Track Meet. The Comets scored 73 points, finishing behind first place New London who won with 114 points.
Van Buren finished fourth with 61 points. Fairfield Maharishi came in seventh with 37 points.
In boys action, the meet turned into a two-way battle for conference supremacy. In the end, Central Lee edged Van Buren by one point to win the meet.
Central Lee scored a 155 points, beating Van Buren’s 154. Cardinal finished fourth with 65.5 points, and Fairfield Maharishi took eighth with 12 points.
For the girls, Cardinal’s Sarah Yeager had another fine day on the track. The Drake Relays participant won the 100 hurdles, 100 meter dash and the 400 hurdles. Yeager ran a time of 12.64 to win the 100 meter dash.
Van Buren also did well, taking a number of second place finishes. The Warriors finished second in the 4x100 with a time of 54.32. In the sprint medley, Van Buren ran a time of 2:03.1 for second. Brooke Barclift claimed another runner-up with a leap of 16-0.5 in the long jump.
MSAE’s Lanie Goldstein set a new Pioneer record in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.7 for second place. Goldstein also took second in the 100 meter dash (12.99). Yelana Loiselle finished second in the 400 (1:05.50) for MSAE.
For the boys, Van Buren claimed top honors in seven events en route to the second place finish. Brock Caves scored big for the Warriors, winning both the 400 meter dash and the 400 hurdles. Caves crossed the finish line in 52.28 in the 400.
Dennis Halverson also had a good day for Van Buren. Halverson won the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.28. Halverson finished third in the long jump.
David Pedrick and Brad Goehring were victorious in the long distance races for Van Buren. Pedrick won the 3,200 meter run in a time of 11:01.7. Goehring claimed top honors in the 1,600, running a time of 4:59.9.
The other two Van Buren wins came in the 4x400 and the distance medley. Van Buren won the distance medley in a time of 3:53.7, edging Cardinal who ran a 4:05.2.
The Comets got the better of Van Buren in the 4x800 to win the event. Cardinal ran a time of 8:57.3 to beat Van Buren by over four seconds.
Richard Fortney also did well for Cardinal, getting second place in the shot put and the discus. Kyle LaPoint took second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:11.3 for Cardinal.
MSAE took third place in the 4x800 with a time of 9:04.08.
