LETTS — The Pekin boys track team won six events and racked up 129 points to win the SEISC North Division Conference Meet on Tuesday in Letts. Meanwhile, the Pekin girls track team also scored a team victory.
In the boys meet, WACO finished second with 101 points and Columbus took third with 84 points.
The Panthers started their day by dominating the field events. Tyler Crouse and Jason Schultz pulled off a one-two finish in the shot put. Crouse won the event with a toss of 46-7. Crouse’s throw of 170-6 in the discus set a new conference record.
Crouse also won the discus for Pekin with a toss of 170-6. In the high jump, Pekin senior Jordan Sathoff cleared 6-7 — five inches better than his nearest competitor. The leap was also a new conference record.
Brad Mosinski continued his fine season with a pair of wins. Mosinski claimed top honors in the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.47. The time beat the previous conference record. In the 400 hurdles, Mosinski crossed the finish line in 55.35 for the victory.
Pekin’s Matt Jones did well in the 200 meter dash, taking second place with a time of 24.25.
The last win of the day for Pekin came in the 4x100. The Panthers won the event with a time of 45.12.
In the 4x800, Pekin ran to a second place finish with a time of 6:43.27. The Panthers also claimed second in the shuttle hurdle relay and the sprint medley relay.
“On paper we were not the favorite to repeat as conference champions,” Pekin coach Davis Eidahl said. “Track meets are won on the track. Our entire team stepped up and gave a great effort. Each boy did their part in helping us win the conference track meet for the 17th time in a row.”
In girls action, Pekin used its depth to rack up 148 points, narrowly edging Mediapolis’ 140 points. Pekin won only five events, but it placed in the top four 20 times.
Jennifer Clubb won both the discus and the shot put for Pekin. In the discus, Clubb’s toss of 122-9 beat the field. Clubb barely beat teammate Amy Horras in the shot put with a throw of 35-0.
Pekin’s Allison Shipley claimed another victory for the Panthers in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.4. Shipley wasn’t done, taking third in the high jump and the 400 meter hurdles.
The other two wins for Pekin came in the 4x800 and the shuttle hurdle relay. The Panthers ran a time of 10:56.9 to win the 4x800.
Pekin did more damage with six second place finishes. Emma Nelson claimed one of those by running a 12:48.28 in the 3,000 meter run. Kristen Freeman ran a 2:35.22 in the 800 for second place.
Three Pekin relay teams also got second place. The 4x200, 4x400 and the sprint medley relay teams all placed second. In the sprint medley relay, the Panthers ran a time of 1:57.28.
