DES MOINES — Mette Mengshoel scored a hat trick with three goals and the Ottumwa girls soccer team cruised to an easy 4-0 victory over Des Moines North on Thursday.
The win improves the Bulldogs record to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the CIML Metro Conference.
Mengshoel started her scoring barrage in the fourth minute. She took the ball down the sideline before breaking towards the net and scoring with a shot at the far post.
Mengshoel’s second goal came when she beat her defender down the middle of the field. The final touches on Mengshoel’s spectacular night came in the 35th minute. Just like her first goal, Mengshoel took the ball outside before scoring.
Kelsey McGuire added the Bulldogs’ last goal in the 75th minute. The North defender stopped, thinking the referee was going to whistle a hand-ball. Instead, play continued and McGuire netted an easy score.
Ottumwa changed its alignment tonight, electing to go with a four-forward formation. The strategy clearly paid off.
“It was just a good game for us to get another conference win,” Ebling said. “We wanted to use tonight as another stepping stone.”
Ottumwa had 25 shots on goal in the game. Mengshoel led all players with five of those shots. Brissa Ceja added 11 saves in net for the Bulldogs.
Ottumwa is back in action on Monday when it hosts Des Moines Hoover on Senior Night.
