Ottumwa falls in hard-fought district
MUSCATINE — Ottumwa gave its best effort Thursday at the district tennis meet in Muscatine, but it wasn’t enough to advance.
The Bulldogs’ postseason came to an end after winning only one of five matches. Ottumwa plays its last dual meet of the season on Tuesday at home against Des Moines East.
Unfortunately, on Thursday the Bulldogs met some of the best tennis talent in the state. The other teams in the district were Bettendorf, Iowa City West, Iowa City High and Muscatine. Even worse for Ottumwa was its first round draws.
“Iowa City West and Bettendorf were the best teams there and our singles players got them in the first round,” Ottumwa coach Alan Paris said.
Michael Wetrich nearly advanced to the second round. The Ottumwa sophomore battled before losing 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
Corbin Gardner also faced a tough opponent, losing 6-2, 6-2.
Bryan Pierce and Kyle Nicholson were the only Bulldogs to escape the first round, winning their doubles match over an Iowa City High team 6-2, 6-0. Pierce and Nicholson fell in the second round to an Iowa City West squad.
The last Ottumwa players in district action were Elliot Higgins and Reid Sheldahl. The duo couldn’t advance, falling to an Iowa City High team 6-0, 6-0.
“We got some tough draws in the first round matches, but the boys gave all they had,” Paris said.
The Bulldogs get one last chance to take the court this season when Des Moines East comes to Ottumwa on Tuesday.
