Ottumwa nets CIML win



OTTUMWA — Even playing without two of its better players, the Ottumwa girls tennis team routed Des Moines East Friday. The Bulldogs cruised to an 11-0 victory in Des Moines.

Laura Schwenk started the Bulldogs with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 singles match. Torrie Centeno followed Schwenk with a shutout, winning 6-0, 6-0.

Kayla Wagner and Jenna Burke also aced their competition. Both players won by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Ashley Owens notched another win for Ottumwa in the No. 3 singles, winning 6-2, 6-1.

Mahala McDanel recorded the last win for Ottumwa in singles play. McDanel won 6-0, 6-1. In total, the Bulldogs only lost eight points in singles play.

In doubles, Lilia Chiklades and Schwenk combined for a 6-4, 6-0 win. It was Chiklades first varsity match of her career.

Julie Hemmings and McDanel scored a 6-2, 6-1 win for Ottumwa in the No. 2 doubles. Another first time player, Rhaya Richmond, teamed with Torrie Centers to win 6-2, 6-3.

Brittni Longer combined with Jenna Burke for another easy win for the Bulldogs 6-1, 6-0. Elizabeth Archer and Ally Schultz recorded the last victory of the night for Ottumwa.

“It was nice to see so many underclassmen play at the varsity level and win,” Ottumwa coach Dan Staggs said. “A total of nine returning girls played a role in the sweep.”

Ottumwa is back in action on Tuesday at Ankeny.
