MONROE — The Albia girls golf team made all the right adjustments Monday. The Lady Dees conquered a tough, windy course to win the Monroe district and advance to sectionals.
Albia edged BCLUW 455 to 456. PCM came in third with 461 strokes. Albia and BCLUW advance to play next Monday at the Lincoln Valley Golf Course in State Center.
Amy Garver paced the Lady Dees with a 100. The score was good enough for second place at the Gateway Recreation Golf Course.
Chrsity Belzer shot a 113 for Albia. Kaitlyn Vitko finished with a 120, Jenna Ross a 122, Mary Pat Sinclair a 130 and Kim Kurimski a 135.
“One thing our girls have done is we stayed steady,” Albia coach Mary Sauter said. “Our second nine we made improvements. That’s a little bit of stamina there.”
Albia and BCLUW were the only two teams to score better on the second nine than the first nine. Kurimski improved by 15 strokes alone.
Eddyville-Blakesburg also played at Monroe on Monday, but the Rockets didn’t have enough players to field a team. Melissa Carman led E-B with a 129. Jo Hartman had a 149 and Marlene Staib took a 150.
The victory pushes Albia into the next round at the Lincoln Valley Golf Course in State Center. The Lady Dees will try to make it to the state meet by topping Emmetsburg, Pocahontas Area, West Marshall, South Hamilton and BCLUW.
Emmetsburg could be the favorite heading into the event after shooting a 413 on Monday. Pocahantas Area fired a 419 on its home course. Sauter is confident her team will give their best effort next Monday.
“We’ve done really well this year, I think,” Sauter said. “Our season hasn’t been the best, but they’ve come through when it counts and they never give up.”
