KEOKUK — The Ottumwa girls soccer squad is looking forward to a postseason date with Indianola next Wednesday.
The Bulldogs still had one game left in the regular season before they can focus on that game. That came against Keokuk on the road Monday night.
Keokuk rallied after a 3-0 first-half deficit to give Ottumwa its eighth loss of the season with a 6-5 come-from-behind victory.
“It was a back-and-forth game. We started out really strong. We just kind of let up and they took over,” said Ottumwa head coach Erin Ebling.
Keokuk netted four unanswered goals in the first half to state claim to a 4-3 lead at intermission.
Mette Mengshoel, an Ottumwa senior, tied the score at 4-4 as she kicked a ball in the back of the net at the 53rd minute for the game’s first scoring in the second half.
Keokuk added two goals in the last 10 minutes of the match before Mengshoel scored a goal in the final minute.
Mengshoel notched three goals on the night. The rest of Ottumwa’s scoring came by Kelsey McGuire and Stephanie Lopez, who added Ottumwa’s other goals.
Ottumwa (4-8) will have several days before it’s Class 4A Region 3 tilt at Indianola on Wednesday, May 28. Ottumwa has never won a postseason contest in its five-year history. The Bulldogs will have a good shot as Indianola only defeated Ottumwa 2-1 early in the season.
The layoff will leave Ottumwa with plenty of practice time.
“It’s a good opportunity to take a look at what we did well before we play that game,” said Ebling.
