STATE CENTER — Amy Garver got Albia back to the state tournament on Monday night.
Albia girls golf coach Mary Sauter brought her Lady Dees to the Class 2A Region 2 meet at State Center. Sauter was hoping for a top-two team finish to qualify Albia for next week’s state meet.
That didn’t happen as the Lady Dees finished fourth overall, but Albia will have a linkster in competition at state in Marshalltown on May 27-28.
Albia junior Amy Garver’s 87 was good enough to make state. She became the first Lady Dee to compete at state since junior Jenah Duea did it in 2000. Duea finished fifth at state that year.
“Amy is very excited. This is career low for her,” said Sauter.
Albia’s fourth-place total of 401 was one of the best team scores at regionals that Sauter can remember in recent years.
Kaitlyn Vitko shot a 102 and Christy Belzer fired a 104. Mary Pat Sinclair carded a 108 while Kim Kurimski shot a 116. Jenna Ross fired a 119 for the Lady Dees.
“The team did fantastic,” said Sauter.
West Marshall, the host school, and Emmetsburg qualified as a team for state. West Marshall shot a 378 while Emmetsburg carded a 387. Pocahontas Area finished third with a team score of 399.
