CENTERVILLE — The host Centerville baseball team let the game get away from them early Friday night in day one action at the Big Red Tournament, held at Pat Daugherty Field in Centerville.
Newton put up six first-inning runs on the way to a 13-4 victory over the Reds. Although Centerville battled back to pull to within 8-4 after four innings, Newton plated five more runs in the fifth to put things out of reach.
In other day one action at the tournament on Friday, the Class 4A Scarlets of Des Moines East handed Davis County — ranked 10th in Class 2A — its first loss of the season, 2-0. East Marshall took a 10-9 win over Moulton-Udell while Albia downed Mount Pleasant, 4-2.
Jordan McCoy tripled for Centerville while Michael Kauzlarich batted 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jon Allgood had two RBI for the Reds, who are now 10-7 on the season.
Action gets started at 10 a.m. today, with two fields going at once. East Marshall will take on Newton and Centerville will take on Moulton-Udell. Then at noon, East will play Albia while Davis County will take on Mount Pleaant.
