AREA BASEBALL ACTION: Big Reds fall to Newton

Albia downs Mount Pleasant, 4-2

CENTERVILLE — Sophomore Jake Stalzer remained unbeaten in decisions this season and the Albia Blue Demons used a workmanlike effort to take a 4-2 win over Mount Pleasant in action Friday at the Big Red Tournament in Centerville.

The Blue Demons, now 13-7 on the season, will take on Des Moines East at noon today. The Class 4A Scarlets handed Davis County — ranked 10th in Class 2A — its first loss of the season on Thursday, 2-0.

Stalzer gave up an unearned run and just two hits through three innings before giving way to Andy Stephens, who also allowed just a run and two hits. Stalzer is now 6-0 in decisions this season.

Albia, which had beaten Mount Pleasant 5-0 earlier this season, used a triple from Andrew Reed and six singles to get the job done this time. The Blue Demons posted two runs in the first inning and two more in the fifth. Reed had one RBI, as did Austin Riley and Jeremy Mills.
