CENTERVILLE — The Centerville baseball team closed out its home tournament with a bang on Saturday, as the Big Reds won their final two games in blowout fashion.
Centerville downed Moulton-Udell 12-0 before blasting Mount Pleasant, 16-4. The Big Reds pounded out 34 hits in the two games.
“It was a good weekend,” said Centerville coach Bill Huisman. “We’re hitting the ball as well as we have all season.”
Centerville also got two solid pitching performances, as freshman Richard England worked a two-hit shutout against Moulton-Udell, fanning 10 batters while walking just one through five innings. Kyle Maldonado picked up the win against Mount Pleasant, allowing three earned runs on seven hits.
Des Moines East won the tournament, as the Scarlets took a 25-5 win over Newton in the championship game.
Centerville’s A.J. Hoffman homered while Jordan McCoy tripled and Thaler Carter doubled against Moulton-Udell. Carter homered against Mount Pleasant and had three RBI. Zach Armington and McCoy each had a double and three RBI for the Reds while Michael Kauzlarich batted 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and four runs scored.
Centerville (12-7) will get back into South Central Conference play today when the Big Reds travel to Clarke of Osceola for a doubleheader.
