AREA BASEBALL ACTION: Big Reds win two at home tourney

CENTERVILLE — The Centerville baseball team closed out its home tournament with a bang on Saturday, as the Big Reds won their final two games in blowout fashion.
Centerville downed Moulton-Udell 12-0 before blasting Mount Pleasant, 16-4. The Big Reds pounded out 34 hits in the two games.
“It was a good weekend,” said Centerville coach Bill Huisman. “We’re hitting the ball as well as we have all season.”
Centerville also got two solid pitching performances, as freshman Richard England worked a two-hit shutout against Moulton-Udell, fanning 10 batters while walking just one through five innings. Kyle Maldonado picked up the win against Mount Pleasant, allowing three earned runs on seven hits.
Des Moines East won the tournament, as the Scarlets took a 25-5 win over Newton in the championship game.
Centerville’s A.J. Hoffman homered while Jordan McCoy tripled and Thaler Carter doubled against Moulton-Udell. Carter homered against Mount Pleasant and had three RBI. Zach Armington and McCoy each had a double and three RBI for the Reds while Michael Kauzlarich batted 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and four runs scored.
Centerville (12-7) will get back into South Central Conference play today when the Big Reds travel to Clarke of Osceola for a doubleheader.

Albia splits at Big Red Tourney
CENTERVILLE — The Albia baseball team was roughed up by Des Moines East Saturday at the Centerville Big Red Tournament, but then the Blue Demons turned around and did a little roughing up of their own at the expense of East Marshall.
East put an 18-2 pounding on Albia on the way to winning the tournament championship, then Albia posted 14 runs in the fifth inning to take an 18-3 win over East Marshall.
East took a 25-5 win over Newton in the tournament championship game.
Tommy O’Leary took the win on the mound against East Marshall, allowing four hits through four innings while fanning three batters and not allowing a walk. O’Leary had five RBI at the plate in the contest and also had a triple. Jeremy Mills also had a triple for Albia, which led 4-3 after four innings before exploding for 14 runs in the top of the fifth.
Albia, now 14-8 overall on the season, returns to South Central Conference play tonight, when the Blue Demons host Davis County in a doubleheader.

Mustangs split Saturday
CENTERVILLE — The 10th-ranked (2A) Davis County baseball team split a pair of games on Saturday at the Big Red Tournament in Centerville, a day after Class 4A Des Moines East broke up the Mustangs’ unbeaten record.
Davis County took an 11-1 win over Moulton-Udell after falling 7-3 to Mount Pleasant on Saturday. The Mustangs lost 2-0 to East on Friday and Davis County is now 16-2 on the season.
Mount Pleasant had 11 hits on the Mustangs Saturday as Coleton Mathews suffered his first loss on the mound. Dexter Hill batted 2-for-3 with two RBI in the loss, while Zach Fligg doubled, Josh Martsching batted 2-for-3 and Austin Utt had an RBI.
Zach Fligg stifled the Moulton-Udell lineup while the D.C. bats woke up. Fligg fanned eight battere and allowed the one run on just three hits. Coleton Mathews homered, while Calvin Mathews, Fligg, Utt and Trevor Fowler all hit doubles.
The Mustangs will get back into South Central Conference play today, when Davis County travels to Albia for a doubleheader.
