ALBIA Davis County pitchers Calvin Mathews and Josh Martsching are only freshmen, but theyve been around baseball long enough to know one thing for certain.
If you dont allow any the other teams to score any runs, you cant lose.
The Mustang pair proved that fact Monday night, as each pitched shutout wins as eighth-ranked Davis County took two over Albia by identical scores of 6-0 in a South Central Conference doubleheader.
The sweep improves Davis County to 18-2 overall and 12-0 in the SCC. Albia drops to 14-10 and 5-6.
Mathews fanned 10 batters and didnt allow a walk while giving up three Albia hits in the first game. He needed all his stuff to out-duel Albias Wes Clouse, who was tagged with the loss despite allowing just one Mustang hit a single by Zach Fligg. Clouse walked eight batters, however, and the Blue Demons committed three costly errors. Only one of the six runs charged to Clouse was earned. Devin Williams and Mathews each had an RBI for the Mustangs. Travis Knowles double was Albias only threat.
Martsching allowed just one Albia hit a single by Riley Waters in the second game. He walked four batters while striking out 12 for the Mustangs, who were boosted offensively by home runs by Austin Utt and Dexter Hill. Martsching had a triple in the contest, and Coleton Mathews and Trevor Fowler added RBI.
The Mustangs will get back into play on Thursday, when Davis County travels to Clarke of Osceola for an SCC varsity twinbill.

Big Reds pound Clarke
OSCEOLA Senior pitchers Michael Kauzlarich and Jay Schmidt worked solid outings on the mound as the Centerville baseball team took a sweep at Clarke of Osceola in South Central Conference action on Monday.
