Cardinal wins 10th straight
WEST POINT — The Cardinal baseball team took a little while to crank up its red-hot offense in a SEISC South road test at Holy Trinity on Tuesday. A.J. McElderry was able to hold down the Crusaders, striking out 11 batters over five innings, to allow for his Comet teammates to pull away for a 12-3 win, Cardinal’s 10th consecutive victory.
“An hour-plus bus ride made us a little slow at the start, but our pitching came right out and was ready to go,” Cardinal head coach Rick Rachford said. “I can’t complain when you end up scoring 12 runs like we did.”
Tanner Thorne led the Comets with a three-hit night, including a double, while also driving in three runs. The Comets pounded out five extra base hits on the night, including three triples with Marcus Giltner and Coty Ridgway each collecting a triple and two RBI apiece.
Ridgway also scored a game-high three runs and struck three batters in relief of McElderry. Cardinal (12-2, 9-2) will look to continue their winning streak and stay in the race for the SEISC South crown Friday night with a home battle against Burlington-Notre Dame.
