OTTUMWA — Jon Duree homered and Ottumwa received two solid pitching performances as the Ottumwa American Legion baseball team took two games from Macon, Mo. in doubleheader action on Sunday.
Ottumwa won the first game 5-1, then took a 6-2 victory in the nightcap. The Bulldogs pounded out 17 hits in the twinbill, and played 14 innings of error-free ball on defense.
“We played great defense in both games,” said Ottumwa American Legion coach John Hart. “Duree played a great first game both defensively and offensively. The team did a great job.”
Sean McCarty earned the win for Ottumwa in game one, allowing one earned run on six hits through seven innings. McCarty fanned two and walked two. Duree’s two-run homer in the first inning proved to be just the spark his team needed. Justin Birch and Aaron Deutsch each had an RBI for Ottumwa.
Tim Guiter gave up two earned runs in game two. He allowed six hits through five innings, fanning four and walking just one before giving way to Brian Wilharber, who worked the final two innings of scoreless relief. Wilharber was 1-3 with two RBI at the plate for Ottumwa, while Kyle Ward had a double and an RBI. Weston Mitchell and Bryce Frueh each had an RBI for Ottumwa.
Ottumwa American Legion (8-8) plays again on the July 14 in Macon. They are scheduled to travel to Moberly, Mo. on July 15.
