AREA SOFTBALL ACTION: Albia clinches share of SCC crown

ALBIA — The fifth-ranked Albia softball team took a pair of wins over Davis County on Monday to lock up a share of its second straight South Central Conference title.

The Lady Dees downed the Mustangs 12-0 in a three-inning first game and took a 13-1 victory in the nightcap.

Albia can lock up the outright title today with a win over Clarke. The Lady Dees will take on Clarke at 10 a.m. in a contest at Albia.

“For us to forget about the weekend’s tournament and come out and play as well as we did, that shows a lot of character,” said Albia coach Mitch Chance. “I was real proud of the girls.”

Emmy Whistler had a pair of doubles and two RBI for Albia in the first game, while Sheila Sanders added a double and three RBI. Liz Anderson also had a double and knocked home two runs in support of Kaylee Coughlin, who earned her 15th win on the mound this season.

Davis County’s Bry Williams took the loss. Brandy Davis had a double for the Mustangs and Kaitlyn Harward tripled.

In the nightcap, Leah Kipfer earned the win in relief of Coughlin. Whistler paced Albia with five RBI in that contest, while Alexis Folkerts and Brittany Moore each had a double.

Williams, Josie Rushman and Krista Gibson had Davis County’s three hits in the contest.
