Staloch is perfect in Ottumwa sweep

DES MOINES — Some days you get lucky and some days you’re just darn good.

Monday, Missy Staloch was perfect.

The Ottumwa Bulldog pitcher faced the minimum 21 batters for a perfect game in the nightcap of CIML Metro Conference softball doubleheader against Des Moines North. She did not allow a hit or a walk and her teammates played flawless defense behind her as the Bulldogs took a 9-0 win to follow a 2-0 victory in the opening contest.

“We made solid plays behind her,” said Ottumwa coach Frank Huston. “But Missy was in complete command out there. She did an outstanding job.”

Courtney Wagner was nearly as good in the first game for the Bulldogs, allowing just two Polar Bear hits in the contest while pitching seven shutout innings. Wagner fanned six batters and walked five.

Staloch fanned nine Polar Bears and got plenty of help from her teammates at the plate as well as in the field. The Bulldogs pounded out 17 hits in the second game, led by Liz Cason, who had two doubles and four RBI. McKenzie Cason batted 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI while Kelsey Luthi also knocked in two runs for Ottumwa.

The doubleheader was played at Grandview College due to the flooding this spring in north Des Moines.

In the first game, the Bulldogs put up one run in the second inning and another in the fifth to give Wagner all the support she would need. Tricia Bix and Courtney Heller each had an RBI for the Bulldogs. Liz Cason also had two doubles in that contest.

The Bulldogs will get back into action on Wednesday, when they’ll host Des Moines Roosevelt. Action will begin at 5 p.m. with the completion of a game suspended earlier this season. That contest is currently tied in the 14th inning. A doubleheader will follow the conclusion of that action.
