Bulldogs split with Roughriders
DES MOINES — Come Monday, the brackets are out.
The Ottumwa baseball team will learn its postseason destination and opponent when the state of Iowa releases the Class 4A postseason pairings in the coming days.
The Bulldogs and head coach Ryan Woods should be in pretty good shape.
Ottumwa (13-10, 10-6) maintained its position in the race to snare as high a seed as possible with a split at Des Moines Roosevelt on Thursday.
The Bulldogs won the first game 4-3, but dropped the CIML Metro nightcap 9-4. Roosevelt took three of four in the season series, having swept Ottumwa at Legion Field last month.
Woods said Ottumwa will more than likely grab the No. 3 seed out of the six teams in the Class 4A Substate 6 bracket. That means a likely date with No. 4 seed Indianola. Woods stated Southeast Polk and Dowling Catholic will fill out the top two seeds, while Des Moines Lincoln and Oskaloosa will comprise the bottom two seeds.
Ben Ryder, Ottumwa’s 6-foot-7 junior righthander, improved to 4-1 on the season with five-plus innings of winning baseball on the hill. The Bulldogs’ ace fanned eight.
Ottumwa scored all its runs in the third inning, while Roosevelt did the same, scoring all three of its runs in the second.
Kevin Anderson and Adam Goodvin doubled. Ben Lott tripled.
Lott was the losing pitcher in the nightcap, pitching only two innings.
Chris Cordray homered, his second blast of the season.
It was a twinbill where Ottumwa couldn’t knock runners in, even though it split.
“It was a night of missed opportunities at the plate. Nobody really stepped up and got a big hit for us,” said Woods.
Ottumwa hosts Des Moines Hoover Monday.
